Supervision in the Public Sector |

Supervision in the Public Sector is a 40 or 80-hour program designed for public sector employees. If sufficient numbers of participants are available from the public safety environment, case studies and other materials will be customized to meet the needs of this specific audience. Based on extensive contact with public sector leaders, managers, supervisors and Human Resource staff, the Executive Leadership Institute staff offers the following modules as a core set of titles. |

Context of public sector supervision; leadership and management issues; supervisory and conflict style issues for the supervisor; strategies for constant improvement. |
| Legal Requirements for
Public Sector Supervisors |
Introduction or review of equal employment, ADA, OSHA, FMLA/OFLA, and other federal, state, and local legal requirements and theories; Affirmative Action and diversity issues; protected class and general harassment. |
| Getting the Work Done and Maintaining Control | Creating the culture of the agency and empowerment opportunities with employees. |
| Hiring and Promotional Selection | Review of job analysis, creation of appropriate selection tools, interview techniques, conducting personnel interviews, making the selection. |
| Performance Management and Appraisal | Employee orientation, setting performance expectations, appraisal techniques and motivation/consulting methods. |
| Employee Development | Supervisors as trainers; costs and benefits of retention; employee development plans; coaching and motivating the excellent employee. |
| Discipline and Termination | Disciplining the public sector employee within the rules; applying the agency's policies in effective ways; documentation; dealing with violence in the workplace. |
| Labor Issues for Supervisors | Administering the contract; negotiations; creating a non-adversarial climate. |
| Strategic Visioning and Planning | Determining goals or visions; building partnerships and developing objectives. |
