| Current Issues Programs will address
hot topics that are identified by public safety leaders for immediate training
and/or education for their agencies. Such topics might include the use of
deadly physical force policy and employee concerns surrounding the use of
force, strategic planning for small agencies, project management, and grant
writing for small agencies.
(Not included in these sessions are basic public safety skills such as
firearms, EVOC, high risk traffic stops, and cell extraction techniques.
These topics are more appropriately handled by agency experts or the Department
of Public Safety standards and Training.)
This one-day training format may include video conferencing and/or on-line
formats. It has been provided throughout the State of Oregon and southern
Washington through state-of-the art teleconferencing and on-line services
through Distance Education at Portland State University. Our recent trial
was a one-day teleconference on "The Use of Deadly Force" which
was beamed from Portland State University to Baker City, Bend and Coos
Bay. Over 60 law enforcement personnel of all ranks from more than 15
agencies attended including members of the Vancouver Police Department,
Washington. This training was approved by the State of Oregon Department
of Public Safety Standards and Training for maintenance training credit,
and received favorable reviews.
